Grayscale, the prominent cryptocurrency asset management firm, has withdrawn its application for an Ethereum (ETH) futures exchange-traded fund (ETF). This decision comes just a little over two weeks before the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was expected to make a crucial ruling on at least one spot Ether ETF application.

On May 7, Grayscale filed a notice with the SEC to withdraw its 19b-4 application for the Grayscale Ethereum Futures Trust. This application, initially submitted on September 19, 2023, sought approval for the listing of Grayscale's Ether futures ETF on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Had it been approved, the ETF would have provided investors with exposure to Ethereum futures contracts.

The withdrawal of the Ether futures ETF application is particularly noteworthy because the SEC was scheduled to make a final decision on Grayscale's proposal on May 30, a mere three weeks after the withdrawal notice was filed. This decision has left many industry analysts and experts perplexed, as they had anticipated Grayscale's strategic move to potentially leverage the Ether futures ETF as a means to pressure the SEC into approving its spot Ether ETF.

James Seyffart, a well-known ETF analyst at Bloomberg, had initially believed that Grayscale planned to use its Ether futures ETF as a "trojan horse" to corner the SEC into approving its spot Ether ETF. However, Seyffart expressed confusion over Grayscale's decision to withdraw the application now, particularly given that the SEC will be forced to make a decision on at least one spot Ether ETF application on May 23, just a little over two weeks away.

For several months, Seyffart and his colleague Eric Balchunas, another Bloomberg ETF analyst, have maintained a 25% chance that the spot Ether ETFs will be approved on May 23, a significant decrease from the 70% probability they had assigned in January.

Despite the withdrawal of Grayscale's Ether futures ETF application, the SEC's decision-making process regarding spot Ether ETFs remains uncertain. In a recent interview with CNBC on May 7, SEC Chair Gary Gensler commented on the ongoing deliberations, stating, "That's something in front of our Commission right now, we're a five-member Commission, and those filings will take up at the appropriate time."

The SEC faces key deadlines for making decisions on various spot Ether ETF applications, including VanEck's application on May 23, ARK 21Shares on May 24, and Hashdex on May 30.
