In Nigeria, authorities are turning to cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to address the pervasive issue of oil pipeline leaks and theft. The Ministry of Petroleum Resources spearheaded a collaborative effort, convening stakeholders at a one-day engagement in Abuja aimed at integrating these innovative technologies into the National Petroleum Policy (NPP).

The event, titled "Incorporation of Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence in Nigeria’s Petroleum Policy," showcased the potential of AI and ML to revolutionize operations within Nigeria's oil and gas industry. Nicholas Agbo Ella, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, emphasized the ability of AI to tackle complex problems akin to human logic and reasoning.

One of the primary motivations behind the adoption of AI and ML technologies is their potential to combat the security threats plaguing Nigeria's oil and gas facilities. Stakeholders are aiming to enhance efficiency through supply chain optimization, process refinement, and safety improvements. The involvement of various stakeholders, including representatives from MPR, NNPCL, NMDPRA, NUPRC, and FUT Minna, underscores a collaborative approach to finding solutions.
