This move comes as Hong Kong positions itself as a frontrunner in the crypto space. Last year, the city implemented a licensing system for crypto exchanges, attracting a whopping 24 applicants vying for approval from the prestigious Securities and Futures Commission (SFC).

With the regulatory fog clearing, ZA Bank CEO Ronald Iu is ready to seize the opportunity. The bank is actively preparing to offer crypto trading to retail investors, but details remain under wraps until final preparations are complete.

Hong Kong Gets Tough on Unlicensed Crypto Exchanges

ZA Bank's crypto ambitions align with Hong Kong's stricter approach to the digital asset market. The SFC recently cracked down on unlicensed exchanges, urging investors to only use licensed platforms. This February deadline forced unlicensed players to either shape up or shut down by the end of May.

Crypto Comeback: ETFs and a Public Registry

The SFC is also playing matchmaker, advising investors to move their digital assets to licensed platforms. Currently, only a handful hold licenses, but a public registry revealing the fate of all 24 applicants is expected by June 1st.

Further fueling the crypto fire, Hong Kong recently approved Asia's first Bitcoin and Ether ETFs, adding another layer of legitimacy to the market.
