On Thursday, three Democrats joined Republicans in supporting a bill to prevent the Federal Reserve from issuing a retail Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) Anti-Surveillance State Act with a 216-192 vote. This bill seeks to block the Federal Reserve from directly offering a CBDC to individuals and using it for monetary policy.

Democratic Representatives Mary Peltola (Alaska), Marie Perez (Washington), and Jared Golden (Maine) supported the bill, while no Republicans opposed it.

Introduced by Representative Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) in September, the bill had 165 Republican cosponsors at the time of the vote. Emmer emphasized that his legislation ensures the U.S. digital currency policy reflects American values of privacy, individual sovereignty, and free-market competitiveness.

The bill now moves to the Democrat-controlled Senate, which recently passed joint resolution 109 to overturn the SEC’s staff accounting bulletin (SAB) 121, pending presidential approval.

This CBDC bill is the second crypto-focused legislation to pass in the House this week. The House also passed the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act (FIT21) on Wednesday, which now advances to the Senate with two amendments and support from 71 House Democrats.
