Hugging Face has unveiled Idefics2, a versatile model capable of understanding and generating text responses from both images and texts. It represents a significant leap from its predecessor, Idefics1, boasting just eight billion parameters and an open license (Apache 2.0), along with greatly improved Optical Character Recognition (OCR) capabilities.

The model excels in visual question answering, describing visual content, generating stories from images, extracting information from documents, and even performing arithmetic operations based on visual input. Despite its relatively smaller size, it competes admirably with larger models like LLava-Next-34B and MM1-30B-chat.

The model maintains native resolutions and aspect ratios during image manipulation, diverging from conventional resizing norms in computer vision. Its architecture benefits from advanced OCR capabilities, accurately transcribing textual content within images and documents, and improving interpretation of charts and figures.

By simplifying the integration of visual features into the language backbone and adopting a learned Perceiver pooling and MLP modality projection, Idefics2 enhances overall efficacy compared to its predecessor.
