In a significant crackdown on a fraudulent online operation, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) of India has seized a substantial amount of cryptocurrencies linked to the scam app E-Nuggets. This seizure was facilitated by the cooperation of major cryptocurrency exchanges including Binance, ZebPay, and WazirX, highlighting the increasing role of such platforms in law enforcement efforts against online financial crimes.

E-Nuggets, which was presented as an online gaming app, allegedly offered customers large returns on investments under the guise of a legitimate gaming platform. The app enticed users with the promise of profitable real-money games and substantial commissions. However, it abruptly ceased operations after collecting funds from investors, rendering them unable to retrieve their invested money.

The ED's investigation led to the discovery of cryptocurrencies worth approximately $10 million stored across 70 different wallet accounts distributed among the three cooperating crypto exchanges. The exchanges responded to the ED’s requests by blocking the implicated wallet addresses and transferring the assets to a wallet controlled by the agency.

This operation has also led to the seizure of properties valued at over 163 crores ($19.5 million), which includes cash, cryptocurrency balances, and even physical office spaces associated with the scam. The thorough investigation unveiled around 2,500 dummy bank accounts through which the illicit funds were channeled.

The masterminds behind the scheme, identified as Aamir Khan and his accomplice Romen Agarwal, were arrested and are currently under custody. Their operation highlights a growing trend where digital assets are used to obscure the trail of illicit funds. However, the inherent transparency of blockchain technology and the cooperation of crypto exchanges have played a pivotal role in tracing and apprehending the culprits.
