As the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) celebrates its third anniversary, it has announced its "Year 4 Internet Computer Roadmap", outlining major development areas focused on decentralized AI and chain fusion. This updated roadmap positions ICP as a hub for decentralized AI and the blockchain industry's orchestration layer, while also highlighting three years of progress.

The Internet Computer blockchain has achieved remarkable milestones, processing over three billion blocks with zero outages and amassing over $3 billion in value locked in the Network Nervous System (NNS) DAO. The ICP ecosystem has also seen significant developer growth, with a 12-fold increase in developers between 2020 and 2023. Popular crypto applications like DMail, DSCVR, and OpenChat are hosted on ICP.

The revised roadmap features two main areas of focus: Chain Fusion and Decentralized AI. Chain Fusion enables direct interoperability with popular blockchains like Ethereum, Bitcoin, and soon Solana, without intermediaries. Decentralized AI outlines a path for on-chain training and operation of AI models, addressing issues like data usage and model reliability.

The roadmap includes milestones like a 10x increase in speed, deterministic API for GPU-based AI computations, and AI-focused subnetworks with GPU-capable nodes. If long-term objectives are met, first-of-its-kind use cases like AI smart contracts for blockchain KYC and natural language communication with LLM AI smart contracts will be possible.

ICP has been working towards on-chain AI and reliable AI models, with a $5 million decentralized AI grant program introduced last year. Cutting-edge AI projects like ICGPT, DecideAI, ELNA AI, Kinic, and Earthstream are already building on ICP. With its new roadmap, the DFINITY Foundation and its team are advancing the cause, creating upgrades to increase speed, effectiveness, and power.
