Embroiled in controversy, ZKasino, the blockchain gambling project accused of a "rug pull," is attempting to mend fences with a hasty 72-hour refund program.

This move comes after ZKasino faced accusations of swindling investors out of $33 million. Initially promising to return investor funds upon launch, the project instead diverted the money to staking, sparking outrage.

Dubbed the "2-step bridge back process," the refund program offers investors a 1:1 return on their Ethereum (ETH) in exchange for relinquishing all ZKasino tokens and future allotments. However, the tight 72-hour window and sign-up process on a personal page (not ZKasino's official channel) have fueled investor anxieties. Some fear the page might be a ploy to steal their remaining assets.

This suspicion stems from the fact that the refund announcement originated from "Derivatives Monke," the ZKasino developer at the heart of the controversy.

A History of Broken Promises

Last month, ZKasino's failure to deliver on its ETH return pledge shattered investor trust. Instead, the project sent a significant chunk of user funds (roughly $33 million) to Lido for staking, claiming a plan alteration. This "revised plan" converted all ETH into ZKAS at a discounted rate with a lengthy vesting period, further infuriating investors who felt defrauded.

Authorities Step In, Funds Recovered (Partially)

Following the uproar, Dutch authorities apprehended a suspect in the alleged "rug pull" in late April. Thankfully, around two-thirds of the missing funds were recovered and returned to ZKasino's multisig wallet. Despite this, Derivatives Monke vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

While ZKasino wrestles with its own demons, the broader cryptocurrency industry offers a sliver of optimism. April saw a significant drop in combined losses from hacks and scams, marking the lowest point since 2021.
