The Central Bank of Iran (CBI) is set to launch a pilot program for its national digital currency, the digital rial, aiming to target domestic micropayments. This initiative marks a significant step in Iran's adoption of digital currencies, offering a new payment method distinct from traditional electronic money in the country.

The CBI officially announced on June 18 the commencement of this pilot scheme, with the digital rial becoming available to banking customers and tourists on Kish Island starting June 21, coinciding with the first day of the calendar month of Tir. This pilot will be an expansion of the digital rial program that began in 2023.

Kish Island, covering 92 square kilometers, is the second-largest island in the Persian Gulf and a prominent tourist destination, attracting around 12 million visitors annually. As a free trade zone, Kish Island allows tourists from many countries to visit without a visa, making it an ideal location for testing the digital rial.

Unlike other types of electronic money used in Iran, which require interbank settlements for transferring funds, the digital rial enables direct transfers between buyers and sellers without needing interbank settlement. This functionality simplifies payments, enhances security, and offers an additional payment method alongside cash or bank cards. Users can pay for goods and services by scanning a barcode with specialized software, facilitating a smoother and faster transaction process.

The primary goal of the digital rial is to support the development of the digital economy in Iran and meet the evolving needs of the payment sector. The CBI highlighted the digital rial's potential to improve micropayments, enhance payment infrastructure resilience and stability, recreate the role of electronic banknotes in small payments, and manage risks associated with private money. The digital rial has been designed for use within Iran's geographical boundaries, exclusively facilitating domestic micropayments.

This move is part of a broader strategy to modernize Iran's payment systems and foster economic growth through advanced digital tools. The CBI emphasized that the digital rial would play a crucial role in improving the efficiency and development of new payment tools, ensuring the country's payment infrastructure remains robust and adaptable.

While Iran has taken a mixed stance on cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, allowing their purchase and sale but banning their use as a means of payment for goods and services, it has regulated the local cryptocurrency mining market since 2018. This regulation is part of Iran's broader efforts to manage the impact of cryptocurrencies on its economy and comply with international standards.
