Japan's Prime Minister, Kishida Fumio, plans to enhance collaboration on artificial intelligence (AI) between Japan and the United States. Reports from local media indicate that the prime minister aims to address the deflationary trend and focus on improving the economy. This announcement coincides with South Korea's plans to invest billions in advancing AI chips in their country.

The AI Collaboration Between Japan and the US Accelerates

President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Kishida Fumio are set to meet to discuss diplomatic matters, with a significant portion of their agenda dedicated to trade relations. Local media sources report that the Japanese prime minister sees increasing opportunities for cooperation in technologies that drive a substantial portion of the economy.

During a roundtable on emerging technologies at the US Chamber of Commerce, Kishida highlighted some of the challenges faced in Japan. Following this discussion, Microsoft's President, Brad Smith, revealed a $3 billion investment in Japan. Kishida has expressed enthusiasm for leveraging artificial intelligence's potential in Japan and has welcomed this recent proposal.

Microsoft's Collaboration on AI in Japan

After meeting with Japan's Prime Minister, Microsoft announced plans to expand its cloud computing and AI infrastructure in Japan by investing $2.9 billion over the next two years. Additionally, they will establish their first Microsoft Research Asia lab in Japan, enhance cybersecurity collaboration with the Japanese government, and extend digital skilling programs to provide AI training to over 3 million individuals in the next three years.

South Korea Also Focuses on AI Growth

Concurrently with Japan's efforts, South Korea announced a significant investment in the AI chip industry. President Yoon Suk Yeol revealed a $6.94 billion plan to support artificial intelligence development by 2027, aiming to uphold their status as a leading producer of cutting-edge semiconductor chips.
