The bank attributes its shift to a lack of factors driving economic growth and decreased interest from retail investors, resulting in a recent drop in cryptocurrency asset values as retail investors have sold more than institutional investors.

According to JPMorgan analysts, their optimism is based on several factors. There is a noticeable decrease in investor engagement in both digital and traditional stock markets, as seen by lower sales in both markets in April. Additionally, some spot bitcoin ETFs have experienced significant outflows, indicating investors might be pulling their money out of the bitcoin market.

These results align with JPMorgan's earlier observations, including increased investor exposure to crypto, the high value of bitcoin compared to gold, the estimated cost of mining bitcoin, and the decline in venture capital investment in the crypto sector. These factors impact the market's growth and stability.

The report highlights a significant increase in profit-taking within the cryptocurrency markets in recent weeks, mainly driven by retail investors. Bitcoin, the best-performing cryptocurrency, saw a 16% price decline in April, marking its worst monthly performance since June last year.

Withdrawals from US-based spot bitcoin ETFs on Wednesday, totaling $563.7 million across 11 ETFs, reflect changing investor attitudes towards the asset and the largest outflow since the ETFs' inception in January 2024.

JPMorgan's research suggests institutional investors face a complex situation, while commodity trading advisers and other quantitative funds may benefit from these transactions. Professional traders often capitalize on short-term market trends using large positions in Bitcoin and gold.

The report implies that while individuals or organizations might not be quantitative funds or CTAs, they could still be concerned about their impact on the market. Data on futures markets shows that whales didn't sell their positions as aggressively as momentum traders did.
