Amid mounting expectations, Seoul's financial regulators, the Financial Services Commission (FSC) and Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), are facing calls to greenlight crypto ETFs following the SEC's decision to allow Ethereum ETFs on May 24, 2024, following earlier approval of Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024.

ETFs serve as a bridge between traditional finance and the digital asset industry, offering investors exposure to a diversified basket of securities. While the U.S. has embraced this evolution, Korean regulators have been more reserved, citing the need for adherence to the Capital Markets Act, which mandates ETFs to be linked to traditional underlying assets.

Xangle, a prominent digital currency data provider in Seoul, has criticized the ban on digital assets in traditional markets as outdated, urging for regulatory revisions to accommodate the growing importance of digital assets in modern finance.

Jung Eui-jung, head of the Korean Stockholders' Alliance, emphasized the urgency for Seoul to align with the U.S. in approving Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, warning of potential capital outflows to U.S. markets if regulatory progress lags behind.
