Kraken, a prominent American crypto exchange, recently disclosed a significant security breach that resulted in a loss of approximately $3 million worth of cryptocurrencies. According to Nick Percoco, Kraken’s chief security officer, the incident was triggered by a bug in the exchange’s funding system, which was exploited by rogue individuals posing as security researchers.

The saga began when Kraken received a notification on June 9 from a purported security researcher claiming to have identified a bug in their system. Upon investigation, Kraken’s security team discovered that the bug stemmed from a recent user experience (UX) change. This change inadvertently allowed credit to client accounts before their assets were fully cleared, enabling these clients to engage in real-time trading of crypto assets.

Percoco acknowledged that the UX change had not been adequately tested against this specific attack vector, which ultimately led to its exploitation. Subsequently, Kraken patched the vulnerability; however, it was revealed that prior to the fix, three accounts had already exploited the flaw. These individuals, instead of reporting the bug directly to Kraken, reportedly shared the information with associates and proceeded to withdraw nearly $3 million from Kraken’s funds.

The situation escalated when Kraken attempted to engage with the attackers. Percoco noted that despite their attempts to request a full account of activities, a proof of concept, and the return of the funds, the individuals refused to comply. Percoco categorized their actions as extortion rather than ethical hacking, emphasizing the breach of trust and ethical standards.

Kraken’s response included tightening security measures and reassessing their bug bounty program to prevent future incidents. While the exchange has taken steps to address the vulnerability and secure its systems, the full extent of the damage and the recovery of the stolen funds remain unclear.
