The LayerZero Labs team has unveiled information that could dash the hopes of many airdrop enthusiasts who have diligently farmed the anticipated ZRO airdrop for nearly two years.

According to LayerZero CEO Bryan Pellegrino, less than 15% of wallets that have interacted with the protocol are likely to meet the eligibility criteria for the upcoming airdrop, slated for the first half of this year.

Reports surfaced on May 8, citing a private Telegram message purportedly from Pellegrino, expressing doubts about the validity of a majority of addresses. The co-founder of LayerZero Labs highlighted that fewer than three million out of a potential six million addresses had engaged in only a single transaction.

Additionally, Pellegrino estimated that approximately 400,000 to 800,000 addresses belonged to genuine users rather than Sybil participants.

Addressing the Sybil Problem with a Filtering Strategy

Sybil users employ a tactic where they create multiple addresses to interact with protocols during airdrop events, aiming to maximize their rewards by manipulating the system. These wallets are often controlled by a single entity or a group seeking to secure a larger allocation of tokens.

In response to this challenge, LayerZero introduced a "report-to-earn" scheme, allowing Sybil users to self-report and retain 15% of the allocation, or risk receiving nothing if detected by other users. The platform also pledged rewards for users who successfully identify and report Sybil farmers.

The initiative has sparked diverse reactions within the community. While some applaud the idea, believing it will discourage Sybil hunters from diluting airdrops, others have expressed concerns that the process could nullify the efforts of those who have been farming for over 24 months.
