Sybil activity, characterized by the creation of multiple wallets to qualify for airdrops multiple times, has become a concern for LayerZero as it prepares for its token distribution. While such activity may temporarily inflate a protocol's popularity, it lacks long-term value.

LayerZero's approach to combating Sybil activity has stirred controversy, particularly with its negative portrayal of Merkly, a cross-chain bridging decentralized app (DApp) labeled as a "Sybil farming application" despite being featured as part of LayerZero's ecosystem.

In an interview with Cointelegraph, CC2, an advisor at Merkly, expressed frustration over LayerZero's characterization, emphasizing Merkly's additional functionalities beyond airdrop farming, such as its refuel tool, which adds value to users.

CC2 further criticized LayerZero's extensive Sybil hunt campaign led by CEO Bryan Pellegrino, questioning its necessity and potential impact on genuine users.

However, LayerZero defends its Sybil hunt as a means to ensure airdrop tokens reach authentic users, coined as "durable users," who are expected to contribute to the platform beyond the initial airdrop phase.

Capilnean suggests that liveness checks, despite offering a viable solution, may face resistance from users wary of identity verification, echoing sentiments shared by Debra Nita, a senior crypto strategist at YAP Global.
