Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other major altcoins experienced a brief decline in value in response to the news, amid rising tensions in the Middle East and instability post-Bitcoin halving.

Keonne Rodriguez, the CEO of Samourai Wallet, and William Hill, the CTO, were charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering and operating an unlicensed monetary business, as reported by Cointelegraph on April 24. Bitcoin's price dropped by 3.6% within an hour of the DOJ's announcement, reaching a low of $63,710 before rebounding to $64,546 according to CoinMarketCap data.

Ether also saw a 2.51% decrease within the same timeframe, followed by a drop to $3,158. Leading altcoins such as PEPE, Shiba, and Dogecoin experienced declines of 6.4%, 2.7%, and 3.2% respectively.

These sudden declines prompted widespread liquidation of long positions, with $33.08 million worth of Bitcoin long positions and $29.88 million worth of Ether long positions liquidated in the last 12 hours. The broader cryptocurrency market saw approximately $23 million in long positions liquidated, based on CoinGlass data.

These market fluctuations occurred amidst escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, with reports on April 24 of Israeli military actions against around 40 locations associated with Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon. This event occurred shortly after the Bitcoin halving, contributing to expected short-term volatility.

The arrest of the Samourai Wallet founders has raised concerns within the crypto community, with some speculating that it could signal a broader crackdown on cryptocurrencies by the U.S. government. Nevertheless, despite these fluctuations, overall investor sentiment in the crypto sector remains resilient, with the 'greed' score on the Fear & Greed Index rising to 72 this week.
