MakerDAO founder Rune Christensen has unveiled two new stablecoins, PureDAI and NewStable, as part of the Endgame plan for the protocol. This move aims to reconcile the two opposing paths for decentralized stablecoins: prioritizing utility and scale with a dollar peg supported by real-world assets (RWA), and pursuing total independence from centralized control.

Christensen acknowledges that since its inception, DAI, which currently has a $5.4 billion market cap and ranks third overall in the stablecoin industry, has been straddling two worlds. One world represents the culture of pure decentralization introduced with Bitcoin, while the other reflects the desire to fulfill DAI's original purpose.

PureDAI will serve as a fully decentralized alternative to the US dollar-pegged stablecoin. Running solely on the Ethereum mainnet, PureDAI will be backed by ether and Lido staked ether (stETH), relying entirely on decentralized oracles. Christensen states that PureDAI's launch is targeted at users who favor a completely decentralized vision, and it will feature a free-floating peg, potentially not correlating with the dollar.

NewStable is expected to be the primary replacement for DAI, emphasizing growth, yield, and resilience. It will inherit MakerDAO's RWA feature while staying connected to Maker and introducing a new freeze function similar to other RWA-backed stablecoins. Christensen suggests that users who prefer the idea of pure decentralization will have the option to utilize PureDAI alongside NewStable once both are available in the upcoming years.

The PureDAI governance token will have an initial "genesis supply" of 2 billion, to be distributed in batches of 400 million over five years. A burn mechanism will also be in place to manage the token's supply.

MakerDAO's introduction of PureDAI and NewStable represents an effort to balance the competing demands for decentralized stablecoins. By offering two distinct options, Christensen aims to cater to the needs of users who prioritize either pure decentralization or a balance between decentralization and utility. As the stablecoin market continues to evolve, MakerDAO's approach to reconciling these divergent paths will be closely watched by the crypto community.
