According to CoinGecko data, GME and KITTY tokens saw a remarkable 18.7% and 55% increase, respectively, with GME trading at $0.0047 and KITTY valued at $0.0035 as of May 28. This sudden rise in memecoin prices coincided with GameStop's stock price, which traded at $23.78, marking a 25.16% increase in the last 24 hours.

Despite the shared ticker symbol and inspiration from GameStop's online community, neither GME nor KITTY tokens are affiliated with the gaming retailer. GME, a memecoin, adopted the same ticker symbol as GameStop's stock, while KITTY drew its name from Roaring Kitty, the online username of Keith Gill, a former financial analyst involved in the GameStop short squeeze three years ago.

The memecoin sector has experienced remarkable growth over the past year, with the GMCI memecoin index indicating a 2.26% increase in the past day, a 41.4% rise in the past month, and a staggering 310% growth year-to-date. According to Rebecca Stevens, Senior Research Analyst at The Block, "The MEME index continues to dramatically outperform its peers after its stellar rally in early March... While memecoin hype did slow a bit over the past month, the index was able to hold on to a lot of its gains."

Stevens noted that the MEME index has been a standout performer, with only the Meme index approaching its previous high reached in March. In contrast, other indices such as Top 30, Layer 1, and DeFi have also surged in the past week, but the Layer 2 and DePIN indices have remained relatively flat.
