In March, trading volume on Solana's decentralized exchanges (DEXs) surged to a record-breaking $60.34 billion, as reported by DeFiLlama. This figure marks a substantial rise from the previous record of approximately $28.5 billion in December 2023, indicating a notable surge in interest and engagement within the Solana ecosystem.

The surge in trading volume is predominantly driven by meme coins on the Solana blockchain. Memes like Dogwifhat ($WIF) and Bonk ($BONK) have witnessed considerable trading volumes, while the introduction of new coins such as Book of Meme ($BOME) and Slerf ($SLERF) has further fueled trading activity on Solana's DEXs. Additionally, meme coins associated with political figures like Donald Trump and Joe Biden have also gained popularity and experienced increased trading volume.

Significant volatility has been observed in these meme coins, particularly following the sentencing of FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried. Solana-based meme coins like "Som Bonkmon Fraud" saw dramatic value surges, sometimes exceeding 30,000%, followed by sharp declines.

Leading DEXs like Orca, Raydium, and Phoenix have been instrumental in facilitating this trading frenzy, with Orca leading with $3.6 billion in trading volume over the past week. Jupiter, a decentralized exchange aggregator, has also benefited from the increased trading activity, with its native token $JUP recording a 24.9% surge for the week. Notably, Jupiter's co-founder announced plans to donate fees to Slerf pre-sale buyers following the accidental burning of $10 million worth of funds, demonstrating the community-oriented ethos of the Solana ecosystem.

Despite the surge in trading volume and the popularity of meme coins, Solana's native token $SOL experienced a slight downturn in early April, declining by over 8% in the last 24 hours. This decline occurred amidst an overall market downtrend, with major coins like $BTC and $ETH also witnessing declines of over 6% and 7%, respectively. Nonetheless, Solana's market capitalization reached an all-time high of over $90 billion in March, underscoring the platform's robust growth and widespread interest.
