As the meme coin market grows rapidly, Coin Metrics released a report on June 11, detailing the risks associated with these cryptocurrencies. The report assigns a high-risk score to meme coins, marked by a Gini coefficient of about 0.8, indicating significant inequality in token distribution.

The Gini coefficient measures economic inequality, with 0 representing perfect equality and 1 indicating extreme inequality. In the case of meme coins, this high coefficient suggests that most tokens are concentrated among a small number of large holders, known as "whales," which increases the potential for market manipulation and liquidity issues.

Coin Metrics urges caution, noting that the centralization of meme coins means large token holders can significantly impact prices with large transactions. The report stresses the importance of understanding the market dynamics and stability of these tokens before investing.

As of June 2024, the meme coin market has grown to over $60 billion in market capitalization, driven by coins like Dogecoin (DOGE), Shiba Inu (SHIB), and Pepe (PEPE). Newer coins such as Dogwifhat (WIF) and Book of Meme (BOME) have also gained significant market value, reaching $2.6 billion and $691 million, respectively.
