Japan-based tech giant Metaplanet has announced its decision to invest an additional ¥250 million (approximately $1.6 million) in Bitcoin, further cementing its aggressive cryptocurrency acquisition strategy. With this new investment, Metaplanet's total Bitcoin holdings will see a significant increase from the current 117.72 BTC, valued at ¥1.2 billion ($7.7 million). Earlier this year, the company declared Bitcoin as a primary treasury asset, pledging to prioritize a Bitcoin-first and Bitcoin-only approach to its financial operations. Metaplanet has outlined a comprehensive strategy for managing its Bitcoin assets. The company plans to record long-term Bitcoin investments at their purchase cost, while short-term holdings will be revalued quarterly based on market value. This method ensures that any unrealized gains or losses from these short-term investments are accurately reflected as non-operating income on the income statement, maintaining financial transparency and responsiveness to market changes.

The strategic focus on Bitcoin has had a profound impact on Metaplanet’s stock performance. According to Google Finance data, the company’s shares have surged by an impressive 287% year-to-date. Just last week, Metaplanet’s share price climbed to 93 Japanese yen, bringing the company close to a $1 billion market capitalization. Dylan LeClair, the director of Bitcoin strategy at Metaplanet, highlighted this milestone, noting that the company has been Japan's top-performing stock for two consecutive days.
