In the aftermath of the recent Bitcoin halving, companies like MicroStrategy (MSTR) are witnessing a surge in stock value, propelled by optimism regarding Bitcoin's future trajectory. Notably, MicroStrategy's CEO, Michael Saylor, also benefited from Bitcoin's upward movement.

This surge coincides with the approval of Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), previously perceived by the market as a potential threat to MicroStrategy's performance.

Following the completion of the Bitcoin halving, there has been a notable increase in trading activity for MicroStrategy (MSTR) and other US crypto-related stocks. The halving, signaling a reduction in future Bitcoin supply, is expected to positively impact Bitcoin's long-term price trajectory, consequently benefiting companies closely associated with Bitcoin's valuation.

Unlike previous Bitcoin halvings that triggered uncertain short-term effects, the recent event has resulted in market stability, allowing crypto stocks to flourish.

Under the stewardship of Bitcoin advocate Michael Saylor, MicroStrategy experienced a remarkable surge of over 12%, reaching $1,310 post-halving. The business intelligence firm currently holds 174,530 Bitcoins valued at $4.6 billion and intends to pursue further acquisitions to bolster its crypto reserves.

Coinbase, another crypto-related stock, also experienced a significant uptick, with shares rising over 5% to $222 post-halving. Over the past year, Coinbase stock has surged by 300%, showing a 28% increase year-to-date. With holdings of 9,181 Bitcoins valued at $207 million, Coinbase is well-positioned for sustained growth in the crypto market.

In addition to MicroStrategy's success, CEO Michael Saylor has realized substantial profits, netting $370 million from selling MicroStrategy shares in 2024 alone. Last year, Saylor initiated a stock-sale agreement with the company, enabling him to divest his shares until April 2024.

With 90% of the planned share sales executed, Saylor has capitalized on significant profits, partly attributable to the surge in Bitcoin and MicroStrategy stock prices.

As of Friday, April 19, 2024, the combined value of Saylor's MicroStrategy shares (excluding those included in the stock-sale plan) and his personal Bitcoin holdings amounted to approximately $3.49 billion.

MicroStrategy's Bitcoin reserves now stand at 214,246 BTC, representing 1% of the global Bitcoin supply following a recent acquisition of 9,245 BTC for $623 million. Saylor remains the company's largest shareholder, with Class B holdings valued at approximately $2.3 billion. Additionally, his Class A holdings have reduced to 30,000 shares after the latest round of sales.

However, MicroStrategy may face challenges stemming from the recent approval of Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The introduction of US spot Bitcoin ETFs has reshaped market dynamics, leading to declines of at least 20% in stocks like Marathon Digital Holdings, Coinbase, and MicroStrategy on certain days post-approval.

Historically, these stocks have closely mirrored Bitcoin's performance, serving as proxies for broader crypto sentiment. However, the advent of spot Bitcoin ETFs has significantly diminished this proxy role, providing investors with direct exposure to crypto sentiment through ETFs rather than related stocks.

Despite this shift, Michael Saylor is confident that MicroStrategy will remain an attractive option for investors seeking Bitcoin exposure, even with the presence of approved ETFs.

Saylor emphasizes MicroStrategy's unique value proposition compared to ETFs, highlighting the absence of fees and leverage in MicroStrategy's investment vehicle. Moreover, he anticipates that Bitcoin ETFs will not only enhance Bitcoin's appeal but also surpass gold ETFs in profitability, describing ETFs as a "universal API" for accessing various funds, including Bitcoin.

Private equity firm Kerrisdale Capital contends that the emergence of new spot Bitcoin ETFs offers investors alternative avenues for Bitcoin exposure, potentially eroding any unique advantage MicroStrategy previously enjoyed through the premiums it charged. Previously, some investors favored purchasing MSTR as a means of indirectly accessing Bitcoin.
