The focus this week revolved around the SARB's decision to maintain interest rates at 8.25%, the highest level seen in over 15 years. The central bank emphasized the necessity of higher rates to combat persisting inflationary pressures on the economy, projecting that inflation will reach the mid-point of its target by mid-2025. South Africa's recent inflation data for February stood at 5.6%, just above the target range of 3% to 6%.

Economists speculate that the SARB might consider reducing interest rates later in the year, possibly following the Federal Reserve's anticipated move. It is widely expected that the Fed could begin reducing rates as early as June this year. Additionally, the USD/ZAR pair reacted to Thursday's budget surplus announcement, reporting that the government had unexpectedly achieved a surplus of approximately $1 billion in February, contrary to projections of a 7.5 billion rand deficit.

Despite government efforts to mitigate deficits by cutting expenditures and increasing revenue through taxation, analysts believe that South Africa may continue to face deficit spending in the near future. The persisting high-interest rates in the country have hampered credit growth, as indicated by a recent report showing a slowdown in loan demand growth by companies to 3.3% in January and household loan growth declining to 4.1%.

From a technical perspective, the USD/ZAR rate has maintained a sideways movement around 18.95, forming an ascending channel and consolidating around the 50-day Exponential Moving Average. Indicators like the Relative Strength Index (RSI) and Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) have also reached neutral levels, indicating a current neutral outlook for the pair. The key support and resistance levels to monitor are situated at 18.5 and 19.50. Upcoming data on Friday, particularly the US's latest PCE inflation report, will also be crucial for tracking market movements.
