Crypto market analysts suggest the altcoin stumble may be tied to a recent spate of spot Bitcoin ETF outflows.

The crypto markets experienced a significant downturn on Monday, with several altcoins dropping by more than 10%. The overall crypto market cap decreased to $2.46 trillion, marking a 3.5% decline over the last 24 hours. Notably, Shiba Inu (SHIB) and Avalanche (AVAX) were the hardest hit among the top 20 cryptocurrencies, falling by 12.7% and 10.6% respectively, according to CoinGecko data. Other significant decliners included Uniswap (UNI) and Dogecoin (DOGE), each experiencing double-digit drops, while Solana (SOL) fell by 9.4%. Ripple’s XRP was the only top-20 non-stablecoin to avoid the red, posting a marginal 0.1% gain.

Market Uncertainty

Henrik Andersson, chief investment officer at Apollo Crypto, mentioned the lack of a clear catalyst for the market fall. He suggested that decreased interest in spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) might be a contributing factor. According to data from Farside Investors, spot Bitcoin ETFs have seen outflows on five of the last six trading days. Andersson speculated that these outflows might have weakened altcoins, leading to liquidations of leveraged long positions in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Dogecoin.

Digital asset firm 10xResearch added that Bitcoin's inability to rally despite weak inflation data was surprising. They suggested that the Ethereum and altcoin crash might have been more predictable given the recent ETF outflows.

Bitcoin Miners and Market Dynamics

Despite the broader market downturn, Bitcoin mining stocks have been performing well, showing strong recovery after the April halving event. Mitchell Askew, head analyst at Blockware Solutions, noted that mining stocks underperformed before the halving due to concerns about post-halving profitability. However, these fears have subsided, and mining stocks are now regaining ground. The Valkyrie Bitcoin Miners ETF (WGMI) is up around 54% since the halving, indicating renewed market confidence in the mining sector.
