Individuals formerly or currently associated with OpenAI and Google DeepMind have called for enhanced protections for critics and whistleblowers in the AI industry. In a letter dated June 4, the authors emphasized the importance of AI companies avoiding agreements that suppress criticism or retaliate against critics by restricting economic benefits. They advocated for fostering a culture of open criticism while safeguarding trade secrets and intellectual property.

The authors urged AI firms to establish robust protections for both current and former employees, especially in cases where existing risk reporting mechanisms have proven inadequate. They argued that traditional whistleblower protections focused on illegal activities are insufficient for addressing the broader range of risks associated with AI technologies that are not yet regulated.

Moreover, the authors proposed the implementation of anonymous channels for employees to voice concerns related to risks. These channels should facilitate communication with company boards, external regulators, and relevant organizations.

The thirteen authors, including current and former members of OpenAI and Google DeepMind, expressed personal concerns about potential retaliation for speaking out, citing historical cases within the industry. They highlighted various risks associated with AI, such as inequality, manipulation, misinformation, loss of control over autonomous systems, and existential risks.

The letter builds on a previous April 2023 initiative titled “Pause Giant AI Experiments,” which advocated for a temporary halt to large-scale AI experiments. This earlier effort, endorsed by figures like Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, aimed to allow policymakers to develop appropriate legal and safety frameworks in response to AI-related risks.
