Optimism, a Layer 2 network, has recently addressed two critical vulnerabilities on its testnet, resolving them several weeks after being notified. Offchain Labs, the entity that initially discovered the vulnerabilities, announced on Friday that Optimism implemented updates to its testnet on April 25. These vulnerabilities, now rectified, had the potential to enable malicious actors to manipulate the chain's history and execute subtle attacks, Offchain Labs reported.

The issues were first brought to Optimism's attention by Offchain Labs on March 22. Offchain Labs identified two specific concerns with the testnet: the ability for bad actors to manipulate the OP Stack fraud-proof mechanism to accept a fraudulent chain history, and the potential for an exploiter to prevent the system from recognizing a correct chain history.

Offchain Labs acknowledged the complexity of resolving such challenges, highlighting that fraud-proof protocols and their associated timing aspects pose significant design hurdles. Nevertheless, Optimism responded by modifying its timer-handling code to address these vulnerabilities.

It's essential to note that Layer 2 testnets serve the purpose of identifying and resolving security flaws before the official launch of networks, ensuring the integrity and reliability of the systems.
