The individual responsible for siphoning $125 million in cryptocurrencies from Poloniex in the previous year has now transferred more than 1,100 Ether (ETH) to the restricted crypto mixer, Tornado Cash.

In a series of transactions, the attacker moved 100 ETH in 11 segments to Tornado Cash, bringing the total to 1,100 ETH (equivalent to about $3.37 million), followed by two additional transactions of 10 ETH (valued at approximately $61,400) on May 7, all conducted within a span of four hours.

Besides Ether, the hacker has also previously transferred 501.62 BTC, valued at roughly $32 million, on April 30 to an undisclosed Bitcoin address, alongside holding assets worth $181.3 million across various blockchain networks. Among the holdings are Ether, TRX, Bitcoin (BTC), BTCT, and Floki, with Ether standing as the most substantial in the portfolio, holding 25,563 ETH valued at $78.6 million.

The breach on Poloniex occurred in November 2023, resulting in the loss of $125 million in digital assets, comprising more than 175 different tokens from the exchange's hot wallet. Following the attack, Poloniex owner Justin Sun pledged full compensation for the impacted funds and proposed a 5% reward to the hacker upon the return of 95% of the pilfered assets within a week.

Despite Tornado Cash being flagged by the United States Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in August 2022, the recent utilization by rogue actors showcases ongoing activity by cybercriminals. OFAC accused Tornado Cash of being used for money laundering by entities like North Korea's Lazarus Group. The developers of Tornado Cash have also faced accusations of money laundering and breaching sanctions, notably with individuals like Alexey Pertsev and Roman Storm being connected to significant laundering operations involving stolen cryptocurrency funds. Roman Semenov, another developer on OFAC's sanctions list, remains at large amid the jurisdictional debates surrounding such illicit activities.
