Polygon Labs Invests Heavily in Zero-Knowledge Technology with Latest Acquisition.

Polygon Labs, a company focused on building scalable blockchain solutions, has made another strategic move by acquiring Toposware, a long-term collaborator. This acquisition forms part of Polygon's massive $1 billion investment into developing zero-knowledge (ZK) cryptography and scaling technologies.

Zero-knowledge proofs are a type of cryptographic technique that allows verifying transactions on a blockchain without revealing the full details of those transactions. This technology is viewed as a promising approach for achieving better scalability for layer 2 blockchain networks like Polygon.

With the Toposware deal, Polygon has now brought three teams specialized in ZK technology under its umbrella, having previously acquired Hermez and Mir in 2021. The key objective is to develop what's called a Type 1 Prover.

A Type 1 Prover acts as a bridge, enabling any blockchain built on the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatibility layer to transform into a layer 2, ZK-based chain interconnected with the Ethereum mainnet. This could unlock better scalability and interoperability among ZK blockchains while maintaining EVM compatibility.

Polygon sees ZK technology as superior to optimistic rollup solutions, which are an alternative scaling approach. ZK is viewed as faster, cheaper, and offering better user experience compared to optimistic rollups.

The acquisition of Toposware's team, intellectual property, and tech stack aims to bolster Polygon's efforts in making ZK-based scaling accessible to all EVM-compatible blockchains. This aligns with the broader vision of enabling an internet-scale blockchain ecosystem with seamless interoperability.
