In partnership with the Crypto Carbon Ratings Institute (CCRI), Polygon Labs has introduced a sustainability dashboard aimed at offering comprehensive insights into the environmental and climate impacts linked to the Polygon blockchain framework.

The Polygon Network Sustainability Dashboard provides essential information such as electricity consumption, carbon emissions, and sustainability metrics aligned with the evolving guidelines of the Markets in Crypto Assets Regulation (MiCA). Funded by CCRI, the dashboard enhances the existing Polygon Proof of Stake (PoS) mechanism and expands tracking to include Polygon zkEVM.

This initiative, following the 2022 Green Manifesto, signifies a renewed commitment to sustainability by Polygon Labs. The development of the Polygon Network Sustainability Dashboard encompasses various sustainability aspects, including statistics reflecting the climate impact on Layer 2 and base layer (L1) operations.

The dashboard features an address-based emissions calculation and utilizes an updated method that aligns with balanced MiCA metrics. It offers flexibility in switching between framework components, demonstrating Polygon Labs' dedication to accelerating climate action and preserving the environment for future generations.

Ongoing upgrades to the dashboard and Polygon protocols, such as Polygon Miden and Polygon CDK, are planned. A significant enhancement will involve providing insights into the electricity sources powering the Polygon network.

Preliminary research by Polygon PoS indicates that 35% of users utilize AWS cloud services, while 22% use Hetzner. AWS aims to achieve 100% renewable energy use by 2025, with 90% achieved in 2022. Hetzner exclusively uses hydropower.

The GHG Protocol suggests two methods for accounting for emissions from purchased electricity: location-based and market-based. The Polygon Network Sustainability Dashboard employs a market-based approach, resulting in an 80% reduction in carbon footprint compared to the land-based method.

Efficient execution of the market-based approach relies on optimistic assumptions about renewable energy utilization. Polygon Labs is actively gathering input data to enhance the interface and exploring avenues to assist validators in transitioning to renewable energy sources.
