This solution addresses issues with ZK Rollups and enables deployed smart contracts on Layer-2 to scale infinitely using ZK proofs. Polygon zkEVM combines the scalability of ZK proofs with the compatibility of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), offering users and developers the benefits of future advancements alongside Ethereum's decentralization, familiarity, and security.

While ZK Rollups have been the basic approach to scalability, they have performance and compatibility issues. ZK Proofs hold promise but require enhancements to be viable for widespread use. Polygon zkEVM significantly improves proof-generation times, resulting in lower costs and higher speeds for users. It is fully compatible with Ethereum, allowing users to build and deploy smart contracts and tools as they would on Ethereum, but with better performance and reduced costs.

Polygon zkEVM is permissionless and open-source, ensuring trust in the source code while maintaining decentralization and security. Polygon has described zkEVM as the next significant leap for Ethereum and aims to onboard another billion users by scaling its operations.

Polygon announced this development in a blog post, revealing plans to open source the code and launch a testnet soon. The testnet will allow the community to explore the new system, identify any shortcomings, and suggest improvements to ensure the successful implementation of Polygon zkEVM.
