The first miner to find a solution to the puzzle earns a reward (in this case, "Bitcoin") as an incentive.

Luckily, the PoS consensus is here to "save the day." The PoS model was introduced to address some of PoW's inefficiencies, such as computational power and energy consumption, leading to a slightly more positive environmental impact. Instead of competing to solve puzzles, block validators in PoS are randomly selected based on the stake or ownership of cryptocurrency held by participants. In a PoS system, individuals who hold a higher amount of cryptocurrency have a higher probability of being chosen as validators. The more cryptocurrency you hold, the more likely you are to be selected.

A major advantage of PoS over PoW is its energy efficiency since it doesn't require as much computing energy. This efficiency makes PoS an attractive consensus algorithm for blockchain networks concerned about its environmental impact. Block production speeds are also faster compared to PoW chains. However, the issue with PoS, according to critics, is that it may introduce a "centralization risk", as individuals with greater wealth can dominate the network.
