Kristin Johnson, a Member of the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), has recently presented three key suggestions to enforce regulations on the involvement of artificial intelligence (AI) in the complex network of U.S. financial markets. At a Technology Advisory Committee meeting on May 2, Johnson outlined a detailed strategy to manage the increasing use of AI technologies in financial operations.

Initially, Johnson called for the creation of a "principles-centered structure" aimed at methodically evaluating and reducing the risks linked to merging AI into financial markets. She argued that this structure could offer a systematic method to grasp and control the possible impacts of AI on the integrity and stability of markets.

Secondly, Johnson emphasized the importance of imposing stronger penalties for the intentional misuse of AI in financial tasks. Drawing a comparison with how firearms are handled in criminal cases, Johnson stated that AI, akin to firearms, could worsen the gravity of crimes committed. Therefore, she suggested that purposeful misconduct related to AI, such as fraud, market manipulation, or regulatory violations, should face appropriately severe consequences to discourage individuals from exploiting AI for illegal purposes.

Thirdly, Johnson suggested forming a dedicated team responsible for examining, evaluating, and synchronizing advice, supervision, and regulations regarding the growing integration of AI in financial markets. She believed that this collaborative effort would enable regulatory bodies to preemptively tackle emerging challenges and opportunities arising from AI adoption, ensuring that regulatory structures remain flexible and adaptable in light of technological advancements.
