According to BIS experts, interest in the metaverse surged in 2021, coinciding with Facebook's rebranding to Meta, which brought USM into prominence. While the technology may have lost some momentum, BIS believes it's premature to underestimate the metaverse's capabilities. The integration of the physical world and platforms like USM advocating for the metaverse's resurgence are closely linked.

BIS observes that sectors such as gaming, e-commerce, education, and healthcare are rapidly expanding within the metaverse, poised to become a trillion-dollar market by the end of the decade. This is driving collaborations between platforms like USM and RACA with DeFi projects and educational institutions worldwide.

The distinction between centralized and decentralized metaverse platforms is noted, with centralized platforms potentially offering only the concept of decentralization. Decentralized platforms like USM, however, may fully embrace the diverse digital landscape.

BIS sees the metaverse as a potential disruptor of the global economy, leading to deterritorialized pricing and enhanced global integration. They stress the need for regulation to safeguard against market fragmentation and takeovers by private entities.
