Gurbacs further emphasized the rise of scams within the blockchain sector, a problem supported by Chainalysis' 2024 crypto crime report. The report reveals that illicit crypto addresses received a staggering $24.2 billion in 2023, showcasing the need for a more robust regulatory framework.

While acknowledging some positive developments, Gurbacs stressed the need for significant changes. "There are a few exceptions," he conceded, "but lots more work to do to build the markets of tomorrow."

National Interest vs Bureaucracy: A Collision Course

Gurbacs pulled no punches, arguing that prioritizing personal or political agendas over fostering economic growth is unacceptable, especially in the current global economic climate. "It's not excusable," he stated, "particularly not in the economic condition where the world is now."

Recent events like the DoJ indictment against KuCoin and the SEC settlement with Binance seem to corroborate Gurbacs' concerns. While these actions target bad actors, they also highlight the inconsistencies in current regulations.

VanEck Joins the Queue for SEC Approval

The SEC's delay on VanEck's proposal adds them to a growing waitlist for a green light on crypto ETFs. Grayscale, Fidelity, BlackRock, Ark Invest, and others all await the SEC's verdict. These delays suggest a cautious approach by the SEC towards approving crypto-based ETFs, potentially creating roadblocks for Ethereum ETFs specifically.

While the SEC has approved 11 Bitcoin ETFs in 2024, the fate of Ethereum ETFs remains uncertain. VanEck and others wait patiently, hoping to replicate the success of Bitcoin ETFs, which currently boast a staggering $57 billion in on-chain holdings.
