Tether (USDT), the largest stablecoin by market value, and XRP are in the spotlight again. Two weeks ago, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse suggested on the World Class podcast that the US government might target Tether. This prompted a quick response from Tether. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino criticized Garlinghouse as being misinformed, while Samson Mow, CEO of Jan3, dismissed Garlinghouse's remarks as mere FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) tactics, often used by competitors against Tether.

Mow commented:

"Garlinghouse is clearly trying to spread FUD about Tether. This strategy has been used by competitors for years but has failed. Just look at Tether's impressive growth and their ventures into new areas like energy and artificial intelligence."

Targeting USDT and Bitcoin

Mow pointed out that Tether is not Garlinghouse's only target. Back in mid-2021, during Elon Musk's criticism of Bitcoin's environmental impact, Ripple executives also made anti-Bitcoin comments. They suggested that Bitcoin mining was environmentally harmful, a stance that could have led to more countries banning Bitcoin mining like China.

Fortunately, China's move did not gain widespread support, and Ripple executives later claimed their comments were misunderstood. Mow added:

"Garlinghouse aims to discredit both Bitcoin and Tether as they compete with Ripple/XRP. Initially, XRP aimed to become a form of money, and now Ripple aspires to issue stablecoins. However, XRP failed to compete with Bitcoin and will likely fail in the stablecoin market as well."
