Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse expressed his belief that the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) would fail in its attempt to classify Ethereum as a security, drawing parallels to the SEC's unsuccessful classification battle against Ripple's XRP token.

Garlinghouse, in a social media post on March 22 on X (formerly Twitter), highlighted the SEC's struggles in court battles and its recent conflicts with other regulatory bodies like the CFTC. Ripple's Chief Legal Officer, Stuart Alderoty, echoed Garlinghouse's sentiments, suggesting that US Congress should cease funding such actions.

Reports emerged this week indicating that the SEC, led by Gary Gensler, was investigating entities associated with Ethereum, such as the Ethereum Foundation, in an attempt to classify ETH as a security. This move received significant backlash from the crypto community and US legislators. Paul Grewal, Coinbase's Chief Legal Officer, pointed out various instances where the SEC has treated Ethereum as a commodity rather than a security, citing statements from former SEC official William Hinman and congressional testimonies from Gensler.

Despite historical tensions between the XRP and ETH communities, Ripple executives' support for Ethereum comes as a surprise. XRP supporters have long criticized the SEC's alleged preferential treatment of Ethereum, arguing that it contributed to Ethereum's growth and development. Additionally, past negative remarks about XRP from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin have fueled animosity between the two communities.
