Instead of creating separate tokens, Runes uses the Bitcoin network's Unspent Transaction Output (UTXO) model to "etch" data directly onto existing satoshis. This initial rush for "rare satoshis" on the halving block fueled the surge in transactions.

However, the initial excitement seems to be fading. Transaction volume has nearly halved since its peak, raising concerns about Runes' long-term viability. Community members are divided on whether it can provide a reliable revenue stream for miners.
