Bitcoin miners have witnessed a dramatic downturn in revenue from Runes transactions, earning a mere 2 Bitcoin combined over the past six days. This is a staggering decline from the record high of 884 Bitcoin achieved on April 24. Runes, a relatively new token standard on the Bitcoin blockchain, has seen its daily average transaction count plummet by over 88% from its peak in June.

According to data from Dune Analytics, provided by Crypto Koryo, the average daily Runes transactions from June 22–28 was 37,820, reflecting a sharp fall from the 331,040 daily average recorded between June 9–15. On June 24, Runes transactions hit a new low, with only 23,238 transactions recorded—the lowest since the protocol’s launch during Bitcoin’s fourth halving event on April 20.

The sharp decline in Runes transactions has significantly impacted Bitcoin miner fees. Over the past six days, Runes transactions have contributed less than 2 Bitcoin in miner fees, a stark contrast to the 884 Bitcoin earned on April 24. This drop in fees is also mirrored by other protocols like Ordinals inscriptions and BRC-20 tokens, which have also seen lower fees over the same period. Initially, these protocols were hailed as a new revenue stream for miners, who had previously relied on ordinary peer-to-peer Bitcoin transfers to earn network fees. The fees from Runes and Ordinals managed to cover the 50% reduction in block subsidy for a few days after the April 20 halving event. However, since then, trading volumes have been erratic, leading to a decline in network fees.

Runes, launched by Ordinals inventor Casey Rodarmor on April 20, was marketed as a more efficient way to create new tokens on the Bitcoin network compared to the BRC-20 token standard and other solutions. Despite the initial enthusiasm, the decline in network fees and Bitcoin’s price has caused Bitcoin’s hash price—a key metric for measuring miner revenue—to drop to nearly its lowest level ever. Meanwhile, Bitcoin miner reserves have plummeted to 1.90 million Bitcoin as of June 19, the lowest level in over 14 years. This drop in reserves underscores the financial strain miners are experiencing amid declining transaction volumes and fees.

The fall in Runes transactions has also affected the overall proportion of Bitcoin transactions. In the last week, Runes transactions have only accounted for between 4.9% and 11.1% of all Bitcoin transactions.
