Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), currently one of the most talked-about figures in the industry, has made poignant remarks in what might be his final statements before commencing his Federal prison term.

In an interview with ABC News on April 1, SBF expressed his disbelief regarding the legality of his actions, stating, “I never thought that what I was doing was illegal.” This interview comes on the heels of SBF's sentencing by Judge Lewis Kaplan of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York on March 28, resulting in a 25-year federal prison term for SBF.

Communicating from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, SBF conveyed a deep sense of remorse and introspection. He admitted to being haunted by the losses incurred, expressing, “I never intended to hurt anyone or take anyone’s money.” Despite this, he acknowledged the negative turn of events under his leadership and expressed a fervent desire to rectify the damages caused. “I’d give anything to be able to help repair even part of the damage,” he lamented, reflecting on his current efforts from prison and the inherent limitations.

Contrary to Judge Kaplan's remarks on SBF's perceived lack of remorse during sentencing, SBF vehemently refuted this assertion, stating, “Of course, I’m remorseful.” He emphasized the anguish and betrayal experienced by countless FTX users and advocated for their full repayment at current prices, highlighting the disparity between their expectations and the reality of the situation.

SBF also addressed the issue of FTX's failure to restart operations following his departure, alleging that the exchange possesses adequate assets to repay customers, had it chosen to do so. He expressed frustration at witnessing the fallout among colleagues and philanthropic projects tarnished by the scandal.

Further complicating matters, SBF called out Sullivan & Cromwell, the legal firm representing FTX's new management, accusing them of bias and asserting that their relationship with prosecutors compromised the fairness of his trial. He criticized the alleged media bias orchestrated by the firm and its influence on public perception.

Looking to the future, SBF revealed plans for an appeal, intending to challenge inaccuracies in trial testimony and the constraints imposed on his defense. He asserted that key evidence and vital witnesses were prohibited, contributing to what he perceived as a tainted process.
