The latest update holds the potential to significantly reduce transaction costs, contingent upon L1 gas pricing. Scroll's core offerings include data blobs designed for data and the SHA2 precompile. EIP 4844, a distinctive feature of the Bernoulli update, lessens rollup data availability charges.

A key highlight of the new upgrade is the introduction of the "blob" concept, offering an unconventional alternative to traditional call data. A fee market is another feature stemming from the Bernoulli upgrade, which differs from gas. The upcoming version of Bernoulli will incorporate the newly launched Ethereum feature.

The noteworthy aspect of the Ethereum feature is its ability to store transaction data in blobs, significantly reducing gas costs for data availability. The addition of the SHA2-256 precompiled contract on Scroll, starting with the Bernoulli upgrade, opens up myriad opportunities for decentralized applications.

Once the upgrade is finalized, modules will be operational at Contract, Node, and Circuit levels. Significant contract modifications include ScrollChain's adoption of blob encoding in commitBatch. The release of a new l2geth on April 22, 2024, mandates node operators to upgrade their nodes before the Bernoulli fork block.

Following the availability of the new l2geth release, node operators can activate the SHA2-256 precompile and update the verifier module to align with the ambitious product release. Version v0.10.3 of the zkEVM circuit ensures the consistency of blob data with the batch. Audit reports from OpenZepplin and Trail of Bits will be released, followed by extensive external testing in the final weeks before the upgrade.

The upgrade proposal was initiated through the Scroll-executed contract on April 15, 2024. The Scroll team will oversee the contract upgrade on the Scroll Mainnet, involving the upgrading of the L1 Scroll Multisig Address, L1 Timelock address, and L1 upgrade proposal transaction. The latest upgrade remains fully compatible with sequencer nodes, follower nodes, dapps, and indexers.

The recent upgrade introduced a precompiled SHA2-256 contract, necessitating operators running on l2geth to upgrade before the recent hard fork upgrade. The upgrade remains backward compatible for decentralized apps. Additionally, it modifies the format in which Scroll publishes data to Ethereum, with Scroll's creative team actively developing new upgrades and features to maximize Scroll zkEVM's potential. A proposal to support EIP 1559 is also underway to enhance L2 gas predictability.
