The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of the United States is currently conducting consultations regarding a proposed alteration concerning the trading of options on Bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs). According to a filing dated April 24, the SEC is keen to comprehend the potential implications of introducing Bitcoin options trading, particularly on market dynamics during periods of heightened stress. The review process also aims to evaluate whether the existing surveillance and enforcement mechanisms employed by exchanges are sufficiently robust to handle the unique characteristics associated with Bitcoin options.

Interested parties are invited to provide their initial comments within a 21-day period following the official registration of the document, setting the final deadline for submissions on May 15, 2024. Furthermore, rebuttal comments will be accepted until May 29, 2024.

This move by the SEC reflects a broader effort to solicit public feedback on the potential impact of Bitcoin options trading. Bitcoin options, as financial instruments, grant the purchaser the right, though not the obligation, to buy or sell Bitcoin at a predetermined price by a specified date. Nasdaq's proposal specifically seeks to list and trade options on BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust, while Cboe aims to offer options trading on various ETPs holding Bitcoin.

Furthermore, asset management firms such as Bitwise and Grayscale are also seeking regulatory approval to list options on their Bitcoin ETFs through applications filed with the New York Stock Exchange.
