Airdrops from two cat-themed memecoins briefly surpassed the total pre-order cost of the Solana 'Chapter 2' mobile device.

Those who pre-ordered Solana's 'Chapter 2' mobile phone had a fleeting opportunity to potentially profit from the unreleased device, as memecoins airdropped to buyers briefly exceeded the cost of the phone.

In April, the teams behind two cat-themed memecoin projects, Cat in a dog’s world (MEW) and Maneki (MANEKI), distributed tokens to the wallets of crypto users who pre-ordered the new 'Chapter 2' device, initially priced at $450.

On April 1, the MEW team airdropped 37,600 of its tokens to each holder, reaching a peak post-airdrop price of $0.0089, valuing the allocation at $334. Similarly, 5,199 MANEKI tokens were airdropped to each holder on April 24, peaking at $0.269 on April 25.

Combined with tokens from other memecoin projects like Wuffi (WUFFI), which airdropped 114,000 tokens to Chapter 2 wallets, the total airdrops would have amounted to $480 for holders, surpassing the device cost and yielding an additional $30 in profit, according to airdrop value checker twoloot.com.

However, the value of these memecoins has since declined, with MEW now valued at $220 and MANEKI at $124.

Buyers of the Chapter 2 devices were required to connect a Solana wallet address during pre-order, making the airdropped tokens available to holders before the phone's arrival. Additionally, owners of Solana's first mobile device, the "Saga," also received the same amount of Maneki in their wallets.

Released in May 2023, the original Solana Saga initially received little attention, with reviews highlighting technical issues and usability concerns. However, demand surged in December when users recognized a peculiar arbitrage opportunity during a memecoin rally for Bonk (BONK). Between Nov. 15 and Dec. 15, 2023, BONK's price surged over 1,100%, making the value of the 30,000 BONK airdrop exceed $1,150 — $551 more than the original $599 price of the Saga phone.
