Hold onto your crypto hats! Buckle up for a blockchain speed race, because Solana has just taken the lead by a storm. In a recent CoinGecko report, Solana emerged victorious, processing a mind-blowing 91 million transactions in a single day. That translates to a blistering 1,504 transactions per second (TPS) on April 6th, during the height of the memecoin craze.

This achievement puts Solana in a league of its own. It's a staggering 46 times faster than Ethereum, the current king of crypto, and over 5 times faster than Polygon, the reigning champion among Ethereum scaling solutions.

But here's the catch: Solana is still in its early stages. While it holds the title for the fastest blockchain, it's only operating at a measly 1.6% of its theoretical maximum speed of 65,000 TPS. This raises questions – how quickly can Solana reach even higher real-world TPS with its upcoming upgrades?

Meanwhile, Sui, another non-Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) platform, is hot on Solana's heels. Back in July 2023, the popularity of the on-chain game Sui 8192 propelled it to a peak of 854 TPS.

Other notable non-EVM blockchains include TON (175 TPS) and Near Protocol (118 TPS). When compared to their EVM counterparts, non-EVM blockchains boast a clear advantage in terms of speed, with an average peak TPS of 284 compared to just 74 for the top 17 EVM-based blockchains.

However, within the EVM world, Binance Smart Chain (BSC) deserves a shoutout. It reached a respectable 378 TPS on December 7th, 2023, fueled by a surge in on-chain activity.

The report also highlights that Ethereum scaling solutions haven't quite reached the promised land. While Polygon, the leading solution, managed 190 TPS in November 2023 (making it 8.4 times faster than Ethereum itself), they haven't surpassed other layer 1 blockchains in terms of real processing power yet. This could be due to the lower number of transactions currently happening on these scaling solutions.

Interestingly, the entire blockchain landscape has witnessed a significant increase in activity over the past year. 24 out of the 25 blockchains analyzed experienced their highest real TPS ever, likely fueled by the rise of NFT inscriptions and the ever-churning memecoin market.

With Ethereum and Solana leading the way in terms of new token launches (over 1 million since April!), the race for blockchain speed is only going to get more intense. So, fasten your seatbelts, and get ready for a thrilling ride!
