StarkWare has introduced a new scaling framework called ZKThreads, aimed at preventing the trapping of funds and enhancing the scalability of decentralized applications (DApps). Louis Guthmann, StarkWare's head of product and market strategy, highlighted the impact of ZKThreads, suggesting that this new layer-scaling technology could prevent catastrophes similar to the FTX incident. He explained:

“ZKThreads provide users with confidence that trading can continue even if a centralized exchange goes down. For instance, during such downtimes, users could automatically switch to trading on the base layer. This would maintain market efficiency, especially during leveraged liquidations.”

Developed in collaboration with Cartridge, ZKThreads addresses fragmentation issues by creating a standardized environment for building easily verified applications. This aligns with StarkWare’s vision of “fractal scaling,” introduced in 2021, which aims to offer an alternative to current ZK systems that often operate in isolation, resulting in scattered liquidity and reduced app connectivity.

Guthmann emphasized the broad implications of the ZKThreads project for DApp development. He noted:

“It’s unlocking new possibilities as the blockchain space typically focuses on layer-based scaling. While this is crucial, ZKThreads shows the potential of horizontal scaling as a complementary approach.”

StarkWare’s layer-2 solution, Starknet, supports this horizontal scaling through execution sharding, enhanced by zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs. This involves breaking tasks into smaller parts while keeping the details secure and private. Guthmann added:

“ZKThreads reimagines coprocessing by aligning it with the main chain, avoiding the typical isolation of traditional models. This boosts security and trust, creating a seamless network of interoperable applications.”

In a related development, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers recently honored a decade-old research paper on ZK-proofs, co-authored by StarkWare founder Eli Ben-Sasson, recognizing it as a foundational blueprint for practical ZK-proofs.
