State Street Global Advisors (SSGA), a prominent investment manager, has announced a collaboration with Galaxy Asset Management to introduce exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that offer exposure to cryptocurrency-related companies. This initiative, disclosed on Wednesday, highlights the growing demand for diversified investment products within the cryptocurrency sector.

The new fund, named the SSGA Active Trust, is currently pending approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). According to SSGA’s SEC application, the fund will focus on investing in the equity securities of crypto companies, crypto futures ETFs and contracts, and spot crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs). The targeted companies encompass a wide range of crypto-related entities, including blockchain software developers, bitcoin miners, cryptocurrency exchanges, and crypto payment processors.

The impetus behind this new product stems from the increasing interest among investors for vehicles that provide broader exposure to the cryptocurrency industry beyond just holding spot bitcoin. This move aims to address the need for investment products that reflect the diverse and expanding landscape of the crypto market.

State Street Bank and Trust will be responsible for handling the administrative and accounting functions for the new digital asset ETFs, while Galaxy will oversee the day-to-day management of these products. Galaxy Asset Management, through its affiliate Galaxy Digital, already collaborates with Invesco on a spot bitcoin ETF.

Anna Paglia, Chief Business Officer at SSGA, emphasized the broader scope of the digital assets landscape, stating, "We believe that the digital assets landscape is so much more than the single crypto components and that crypto-native companies are best equipped to understand that ecosystem and its correlation with financial markets."

SSGA, which has a long history of managing ETFs since launching its first listed ETF in 1993, oversees assets totaling over $4.3 trillion as of March this year. Meanwhile, Galaxy, focused on digital assets, manages around $6.2 billion in assets.

This partnership marks a significant step in the evolution of crypto investment products, aiming to cater to the sophisticated needs of investors seeking comprehensive exposure to the burgeoning digital assets market. The collaboration between SSGA and Galaxy Digital underscores the increasing integration of traditional finance with the rapidly developing world of cryptocurrency.
