In an unexpected turn of events, Status, a long-dormant Ethereum-based project that once seemed destined to fade into obscurity, has surged to the forefront of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Emerging from the initial coin offering (ICO) boom, Status, an open-source messaging application, has captured attention as one of the most actively developed projects in recent times, according to a report from crypto intelligence platform Santiment.

As of March 21, Santiment revealed that Status had witnessed an astonishing resurgence in development activity, boasting over 434 GitHub commits in the past month alone. This places Status as the third-most actively developed project over the last thirty days, trailing behind only Cardano (ADA) and Chainlink, with a mere ten and seventeen commits less respectively.

Status, positioned as a competitor to established platforms like Discord and Telegram, prides itself on its community-oriented features and purported ability to facilitate cryptocurrency transactions among users. Despite facing setbacks in its development journey, including scalability challenges leading to the abandonment of its "Whisper" protocol and staff layoffs during the 2018 crypto market crash, Status has managed to rebound significantly.

Addressing concerns within the community, a Nov. 8 blog post from Status acknowledged the initial optimism surrounding its vision of creating a consumer-facing "super app." However, the project encountered various hurdles, leading to a reassessment of its strategy. With the resurgence of development activity and a resurgence in cryptocurrency prices starting in late 2022, Status found renewed momentum.

"The 2022 bull market endowed us with the financial wherewithal needed to execute Status' updated strategy, so the next step was to scale the org back up to the resource level required to realize our ambitious vision," wrote the Status team.

Despite its newfound momentum, the project's native token, SNT, tells a story of its own. Currently trading at $0.04, SNT has experienced a 2.4% increase in the last 24 hours and approximately 50% growth over the past year. However, it remains down 93.4% from its all-time high of $0.68, recorded on Jan. 3, 2018, according to CoinGecko data.
