Financial services firm T-Rex Group has taken a bold step by applying for what could be one of the most volatile exchange-traded funds (ETFs) ever seen in the United States. This new product, a leveraged MicroStrategy (MSTR) ETF, has been aptly dubbed the “ghost pepper” of ETFs by industry experts due to its potential for extreme volatility.

Senior Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas highlighted the significant risks associated with this proposed ETF in a June 27 post on X. He remarked, “These are a near-lock to be most volatile ETFs ever seen in the U.S. [...] The ghost pepper of ETF hot sauce.” According to Balchunas, if approved, this ETF would expose investors to volatility levels approximately 20 times greater than that of the S&P 500.

The Volatility Factor

Balchunas drew parallels with a three-times-leveraged MicroStrategy ETF currently available on the European market, noting its substantial volatility. He pointed out that this European ETF makes the QQQ — an index tracking the top 100 publicly traded companies in the United States — appear as stable as a “money market fund” in comparison.

MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin Holdings and Market Influence

MicroStrategy, founded as a software company in 1989 by Michael Saylor, has significantly shifted its focus in recent years. Under Saylor’s leadership, who now serves as executive chairman, MicroStrategy has become one of the largest publicly traded holders of Bitcoin. The company currently holds an impressive 214,400 Bitcoins, valued at around $13.2 billion.

Saylor, a staunch Bitcoin advocate, has positioned Bitcoin as a hedge against inflation and a superior alternative to holding cash. This strategic move has paid off handsomely, with MicroStrategy shares soaring 120% since the beginning of the year and a staggering 336% compared to the same time last year. This surge correlates with the significant rise in Bitcoin’s price, which is currently trading at $61,589, marking a 104% increase over the past year, according to TradingView data.

A Ripple Effect in Corporate Strategy

MicroStrategy's aggressive Bitcoin acquisition strategy, initiated in 2020, has inspired other companies to adopt similar treasury-hedging strategies. For instance, Japanese investment firm Metaplanet announced on April 9 the purchase of $6.5 million worth of Bitcoin as a core treasury asset, resulting in an 89% surge in its stock price on the day of the announcement.

Following suit, healthcare firm Semler Scientific purchased 581 BTC for $40 million on May 28, integrating Bitcoin into its core treasury strategy. Most recently, on June 10, Canadian exchange-traded product (ETP) issuer and venture capital firm DeFi Technologies acquired 110 Bitcoin as a core reserve asset for the company.
