A single game, "Tapos," has caused a dramatic increase in daily transactions on the Aptos blockchain, with a 1,466% surge over just three days.

By the end of May, the 7-day moving average of user transactions on Aptos skyrocketed to 47 million, a sharp increase from under 1 million at the beginning of the month. The raw number of transactions reached an astonishing 156 million during this period.

For those unfamiliar, Aptos launched in October 2022 amidst significant hype. Originating from Facebook's Libra blockchain initiative, it attracted high-profile backers and positioned itself as an easier-to-build-on alternative to Solana, leveraging the Move programming language. Despite not always being in the spotlight, Aptos ranks as the 17th largest network by total value locked and has built a reputation within the crypto community.

Aptos has successfully partnered with major companies like Microsoft, Brevan Howard, Universal Pictures, and Google Cloud to enhance its ecosystem and drive adoption. However, the recent transaction surge is not due to these partnerships but rather the introduction of the game "Tapos."

"Tapos" is a simple clicker game where each click counts as a transaction that increments the player's counter. Players tickle a cat with each click and earn HEART tokens, paying a minimal gas fee of around 0.000008 APT, less than one-hundredth of a cent. The number of HEART tokens earned depends on the player's clicks relative to all players' clicks within a game period, encouraging more clicks for more tokens.

Given its structure, "Tapos" naturally led to a transaction surge. The 7-day moving average of active addresses on Aptos also rose from 61,000 in early May to over 150,000 by month's end, coinciding with the game's launch. On May 26, "Tapos" announced the end of its campaign, having generated over 323 million transactions and attracting more than 63,000 users. As a result, the high transaction counts have begun to decline.

Despite its short-lived nature, the success of "Tapos" underscores Aptos's strengths. A game demanding such high transaction volumes would face challenges on higher-fee networks. The game's mechanism also leverages Aptos's native functionalities effectively, showcasing the blockchain's capability to handle substantial activity with minimal costs.
