Terraform Labs, the company behind the failed algorithmic stablecoin TerraUSD (UST), filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States on Sunday, January 21. After the Terra ecosystem’s devastating collapse in May 2023, which wiped out billions of dollars worth of investor funds and sparked a furious backlash, this official action followed.

The downfall of Terra UST, which used to be regarded as one of the most influential market players in stablecoins was an impressive crash that shook the crypto market. Its algorithmic design, intended to maintain a 1:1 peg with the US dollar through code-based mechanisms, spectacularly failed setting off a domino effect that brought down the entire Terra ecosystem. The amounts were massive, with millions of dollars in losses for investors and companies related to the project.

With mounting legal challenges and circling creditors, Terraform Labs turned to Chapter 11 bankruptcy as a path through the financial and legal ruins.
