Subsequent to the debate regarding the article’s possibly sensationalized focus, the title was revised to “EU prohibits anonymous crypto payments to hosted wallets.”

The initial arguments suggesting the ban on anonymous crypto wallets were primarily based on Patrick Breyer’s commentary. He pointed out that transactions exceeding €3,000 in commercial settings would be prohibited from being carried out with anonymous cash payments under the new regulations. Furthermore, cash transactions above €10,000 in business environments would be entirely barred. Additionally, payments to hosted wallets utilizing cryptocurrencies without any minimum threshold would also face prohibition.

A distinctive voice against these regulations was Patrick Breyer, known as a digital freedom advocate from the Pirate Party. Regarding transfers between crypto-asset service providers and self-custody wallets, the regulations stipulate the implementation of “risk-mitigating” measures, including blockchain analytics or the collection of additional data concerning the origin and destination of crypto-assets. These directives correspond with the Transfer of Funds Regulation (TFR), which mirrors the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) travel rule in the EU domain.
